“YEA, I YIELD TO UB TODDUH FRIEND, GULLUH STATESMAN, ROBERT SMALLS!” A BOOK REVIEW OF “GULLAH STATESMAN ROBERT SMALLS: FROM SLAVERY TO CONGRESS” BY AGNES B. LEVINE

By Edward A. Miller, Jr.

University of South Carolina Press

The book, “Gullah Statesman Robert Smalls: From Slavery To Congress” is a great book to read to learn and understand the story behind slavery of Gullah-Geechee folks and their subsequent freedom. It is rich in Civil War history of the 18th Century from the Gullah point of view.

This is the story about the courageous act of a black Gullah-Geechee man who took a Confederate ship and sailed that ship into the hands of the Union military and ultimately to freedom for himself and everybody on board! It was a truly heroic plan of Robert Smalls who piloted the ship using his expert captain skills that Robert learned from working on the ship, who avoided detection by the Confederate soldiers guarding their forts along the waters’ escape route quite cleverly, and who escaped death in the blackness of the rough sea, all remarkably contributed to the Union having the victory of winning the Civil War!

Gullah Statesman Robert Smalls: From Slavery To Congress takes the reader through the journey of Robert Smalls who went on to stay committed to helping the Gullah-Geechee men, women, and children affected by the harshness of slavery and the harsh aftermath of slavery when the conditions of former slaves were just as tough. Robert Smalls not only gained his personal freedom, it was the beginning of securing freedom for others. Robert Smalls helped former slaves and freed slaves to obtain better educational opportunities, their right to vote for better opportunities, and improved economic opportunities for the newly-freed Blacks. He won his nomination to the Legislature in South Carolina and became known as the Gullah Statesman. That gave him a representative voice in the legislature. All of this was a selfless act by Robert Smalls who went on to demonstrate his love and respect for humanity in the aftermath of slavery.

Gullah Statesman Robert Smalls: From Slavery To Congress” is an important piece in the history of the South into the 20th Century. The book discusses the political climate of the day in terms any political science student will appreciate. I learned such great truth about this Gullah Statesman resulting in an intense feeling of pride of the Gullah-Geechee American citizen.

“CHOOSING LIFE” A BOOK REVIEW OF “BE FREE OR DIE: THE AMAZING STORY OF ROBERT SMALLS’ ESCAPE FROM SLAVERY TO UNION HERO” BY AGNES B. LEVINE

By Cate Lineberry

Copyright 2017©

St. Martin’s Press

The book, “Be Free Or Die: The Amazing Story of Robert Smalls’ Escape From Slavery To Union Hero” by Cate Lineberry is a great book for the layperson to get on the ship, the Planter, with Gullah born Robert Smalls and experience escaping the Confederates and arriving in the hands of the Union as free men, women, and children. The reader can feel the women celebrate by singing worship songs and the excitement that they had finally made it – they were free! These women kept prayer watch as the men in the crew maintained the ship and arsenal while fighting their way to freedom following every expert command of the Captain, Robert Smalls who was a Gullah African-American.

Freedom was more than simply turning the Planter ship and crew over to the Union Military. Freedom presented the opportunity for Robert Smalls to rise to fame and leadership. Robert Smalls’ life then started on a political journey with him speaking as a politician and taking the dark reality of slavery to those positioned to help. He became known throughout the country as the Gullah Statesman.

In addition, Robert Smalls earned the recognition as a Royal King in his Beaufort, South Carolina community. He smartly allowed wiser men to invest his prize money from the Planter and that investment sustained him economically. That investment also enabled him to own both his house and several others. Robert Smalls became a successful entrepreneur and was able to provide a formal education for his offspring.

Robert Smalls quickly learned to use his charisma and sense of humor keenly to make up for his lack of a formal education. His strong faith in helping others achieve better opportunities kept him fearless as he was constantly hunted by angry confederates who resented the fact that he piloted the Confederates’ ship, the Planter, and turned it over to the Union.

What I like best about, “Be Free Or Die: The Amazing Story of Robert Smalls’ Escape From Slavery To Union Hero,” is that Robert Smalls accomplished opening a school for all black children and actually won his case in the highest court in the land, the United States Supreme Court. That SCOTUS victory allowed Robert Smalls to retain his right as a land owner of his former Master’s Prince Street home that Robert purchased at a tax auction.

This book is a truly great read for Black History 365. The Author does an excellent job highlighting how important citizenship is for everyone. Political student will enjoy this book, too!

“I, TOO, CAN BE FREE!”

A BOOK REVIEW OF “SEVEN MILES TO FREEDOM”

BY AGNES B. LEVINE

By Janet Halfman

Copyright 1995©

Lee & Low Book, Inc.

This book, “Seven Miles To Freedom” is a great book to introduce young readers to the valuable and important contribution to Black History by Gullah-Geechee African-Americans.

“Seven Miles To Freedom” is beautifully illustrated allowing youth to interpret the story in pictures. The story of Robert Smalls is an important story describing how brave and courageous he was. It also tells the story of how desperate he was to be free and help his family and others to be free from slavery, too.

This is a book that will cause young black children to learn more about the great blacks who contributed to our black history and make them proud all year long about Black History. What I like the best about this children’s book is that children will easily find a page worth framing and hanging in their bedroom proudly!
